1) In Robert Burns’ poem “To a Mouse” the lines “The best laid plans of mice and men” represent the futility of trying to prepare for the future as well as how one’s best laid intentions can sometimes go astray. In a well-organized analysis explore how various characters from Steinbeck’ novel, Of Mice and Men, are representative of Burns’ theme. Choosing one of the following characters: George Milton, Lennie Small, Candy (the old swamper),Curley’s wife, or the African American stable buck, explore how this or these characters are symbolic of Burns’ theme.

Nonfiction Essay Synthesis Using Arch Method Approach

Directions: Utilizing your arch method prompts and practices, you will synthesize an essay using your analysis


Requirements:

1) You must create a hand written essay outline   (25 points)

2) You must write a double spaced hand written essay rough draft that must be edited by a peer    (45 points)

3) You must synthesize a hand written double spaced final draft of your essay (60 points)



Prompts:

1) Read the following passage about Muhammad Ali’s refusal to enter the Vietnam War draft. Consider how his use of imagery, diction, and tone affect his message about his decision.

2) Read Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop”. After reading the speech consider how King uses pathos, tone, and imagery to affect his audience about the need for equality and civil rights for all Americans.

3) Read the following passage about Queen Elizabeth I view about war with Spain. Consider how her use of imagery, diction, and tone affect her message about her decision to oppose the Spanish Armada.

4) Read Clarence Darrow’s Summation for the Sweet murder trial. After reading the speech consider how Darrow uses pathos, tone, and imagery to affect his jury about Sweet’s innocence/guilt.
