Utah Compose Essay Practices

Dear Students:

Please remember to visit the Utahcompose.com website to complete the essay practices in preparation for the upcoming SAGE writing assessment.

Here is what you should remember while writing:

1.  LENGTH.  The computer LOVES length.  An absurd, irrational amount of length.  5 paragraphs, especially the typical 3-5 sentence paragraphs, is not enough.  Writing a lot is the key.

2.  TERRIBLE TRANSITION WORDS.  The computer loves paragraphs that begin First, Second, Third, and In Conclusion.   This got me another 2 points, just by adding these words in the beginning of each paragraph.  It also loves phrases like "Most importantly"  or "If . . . then" and all other basic transitions:  before, however, furthermore, now, etc.  There are tutorials in the system about this.  Obviously, good transitions are a part of skilled writing, though I personally hate "In Conclusion."

3.  SENTENCE VARIETY.  Include different sentence structures as much as possible:  simple, compound, complex, and compound complex.  I'd throw in a few imperative and interrogative sentences just to be safe.

4.  EXAMPLES and PERSONAL EXPERIENCES  Include some kind of personal experience or example.

5.  SPELLING AND GRAMMAR still count.

6.  CLEAR INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSION are important.  Like 5 points important.
